Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
A warm renovation has transformed this 1960s hotel into a lovely boutique hotel along the riverfront.

Whether you're looking for an easy place to get off of the interstate and spend the night or for a destination hotel for a weekend in college town Peoria, the 109-room Mark Twain Hotel satisfies. Warm wood accents in the lobby accentuate a library rich with titles and brown leather chairs (not to mention free Wi-Fi and Starbucks coffee, as well as a framed portrait of the hotel's namesake). Our king guest room had white bedding and bath fixtures and minty-green walls, giving the older property a fresh feel. The beds were soft, the free Wi-Fi worked on the first try, and the staff was pleasant (though not particularly knowledgeable when it came to dinner recommendations). The baths sport plate-size shower heads and pretty fixtures, but not a lot of space on the sink to perch toiletries. We visited the day after Christmas, which also was a Monday, and many of Peoria's restaurants were closed. We ended up eating dinner at the on-site Two25, which actually proved to be a good choice. It's a dimly lit bar and grill setting, with exposed ductwork and pretty Tiffany-style lamps over the tables. Our server was friendly, helpful and knew that just-right balance of attention vs. privacy. We tried the barbecue chicken pizza, and found ourselves eating way more of it than we'd planned. The smoky chicken complemented the brown sugar-sweet sauce, and the chef's chocolate cake went down easily, too. Rooms from $130, including a breakfast buffet that features made-to-order waffles and omelets and coffee roasted locally at Leaves N Beans.
