Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
Updated guest rooms in a convenient downtown location make this chain hotel option a reliable place to stay.

After a day of driving across the Midwest on mostly barren interstate highways, we were thrilled to stop at Four Points Sheraton Peoria and realize we could walk to dinner. That also was good because it takes some maneuvering and meandering to find your way from the parking garage to the hotel's front desk, which was a little trying in midwinter with luggage and a little one in tow. With 275 guest rooms and suites, this Sheraton is the kind of hotel that has seen a partial renovation, leaving you wondering why some things were touched and others left alone. The most important parts have seen a face-lift: The mattresses and linens are soft, the baths have granite counters and curved shower rods, and a 42-inch flat-screen TV nearly dominates the room. An older overstuffed lounge chair and ottoman seemed wedged into the room between the door and the TV stand, while a desk and desk chair line up near the windows on the far end of the room. While leisure travelers would prefer the lounge chair, its placement and location make it feel more clunky and unnecessary. Still, business travelers love the desk and the free Wi-Fi. The lobby, common areas, doors and doorknobs all felt due for freshening, but that certainly wouldn't drive anyone away. You could eat on-site at the Bennigan's, but we opted to walk four blocks to Jim's Steakhouse, a Peoria legend, and we're glad we did. The room rate does not include breakfast, but for $99, that felt like a reasonable amount to pay for this stay.
