Midwest Living Review

Danny Lee
Wake up and smell the blue plate specials—for retro dining, the Palms Grill Cafe is the real deal.

The Palms Grill in little Atlanta, Illinois, must come remarkably close to recapturing the essence of what it was like to dine in a small-town cafe in 1940s rural America. With Art Deco light fixtures, a checkered linoleum floor and waitresses in period uniforms, the experience just feels right. Except for the prices—$5.50 for a fried bologna sandwich? $3.95 for pie a la mode? Really?

There’s a huge, ornate mechanical cash register on the service counter, but it’s just for looks; servers ring you up on a modern machine. For historical context, check out the back room for large photographs of Atlanta's early years, before and after Route 66 came through.
