Midwest Living Review

Karen Sorensen
This massive park is the perfect place to enjoy a bird's-eye view of the mighty Mississippi River.

This popular state park 30 or so miles from Galena is home to some of the most breathtaking views of the Mississippi River you are likely to find.

Named a national landmark in 1973, the sprawling 2,500-acre site encompasses trails to challenge the most seasoned hiker, countless picnic grounds, enough camping space to accommodate a small town, and great access to the river for those who like to boat and fish. The state also allows limited deer and turkey hunting in season.

There are more than enough activities here to fill a weekend, but even a short drive through is worthwhile for the number of scenic lookout spots. Take a little time to admire the pavilions as well, many of which built by Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
