Midwest Living Review

A self-guided walking tour visits historic sites in the Illinois river town of Alton.

A busy steamboat town near three major Midwestern rivers, the riverfront town of Alton played a role in many of the great issues of the 1800s. This trail--really a self-guided walking tour--leads to 10 spots around town, including the site of the final Lincoln-Douglas debate, remnants of a major Confederate prison and cemetery, and the home of the senator who authored the amendment to end slavery. Great signage, bronze statues, and the hip and informative brochure bring new insights into such topics as slavery, westward expansion and the Civil War. Pick up the Alton's Lincoln and Civil War Legacy Trail brochure from the Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau or download it from the website.
