Midwest Living Review

Karen Sorensen
Yes, Galena is home to many very good restaurants, but you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't add this one to the list of places to check out.

Come for the vistas, stay for the food. Chestnut Mountain Resort has a winner with its Sunset Grille, especially if you like alfresco dining on a 1,400-square-foot patio. It's a bit of challenge to get here -- the signage for Chestnut Mountain Resort could be much, much better -- but once you see the glass windows fronting the Sunset Grille restaurant and, even better, the open air deck where you can also dine, you'll forget that it was tricky to find. There is no such thing as a bad view here -- even on a foggy day -- and we arrived with the attitude that even if the meal was mediocre, the scenery would make it worthwhile. Fortunately, our worries were unfounded; the food is good and fairly priced. It's pretty simple, with a handful of appetizers, three salads and nine sandwiches at lunch. Yes, they offer the ubiquitous hamburger and grilled chicken sandwich, but they also had a portabello/eggplant sandwich, a pulled pork sandwich and a Rueben. Almost everything was $10 or $11, and the salads were a bargain at $7. During our lunch visit, we sampled three things: a Cajun-spiced, wonderfully sloppy mess of a black and blue burger, the pulled barbecue pork and the fish sandwich, all served with coleslaw and a choice of cottage fries (fine) or onion rings (outstanding). At dinner, the options go more upscale but, again, the menu is small. Six entrees include stuffed chicken, chicken cavatelli, wild salmon, walnut-crusted walleye, New York strip and filet mignon. Prices start at $19 for the chicken and top out at $25 for the steak. Even better, all entrees come with soup or a house salad, and you can order vegetables or potatoes (horseradish whipped, sweet potato wedges, etc.) on the side for $3 more.
