Midwest Living Review

Karen Sorensen
This restaurant offers fresh fare in an atmosphere that's charming, relaxing and just far enough from downtown Galena to give you a break from the crowds.

This is the kind of restaurant that looks appealing from the outside and is even better on the inside. It's located in an old building erected in the late 1800s, but its interior is open, sunny and cozy. The menu is organic and local, and the bottomless coffee makes it easy to be lazy and hang out for a while. That it's on the opposite side of the river from Main Street may be its biggest selling point. It's a close walk if you want to head to that area, but a lovely escape if you want to miss the crowds. Otto's offerings are fairly basic: breakfast all day long, sandwiches at lunch and lighter fare at night. Food is prepared to order, and with the kitchen open in the back, it's easy to see that there's nothing coming out of the freezer and going into the microwave. They don't go overboard on the choices; you'll find a couple of pancake options, a couple of French toast options, a handful of omelets, biscuits and gravy (a local favorite), as well as sandwiches such as chicken salad, ham and cheese, and hummus/roasted veggies, most served on pretzel rolls. We tried a cheddar, broccoli and bacon omelet ($7.25) with home-fried potatoes and an English muffin. Though we would have enjoyed sharper cheddar in the omelet, the potatoes were perfect: crunchy and flavorful, with just a touch of pepper. We'll be back to sample some of their evening dishes, including such interesting appetizer choices as the blue cheese plate served with candied almonds and a BHT plate (babaganoush, hummus and tabouli).
