Midwest Living Review

Karen Sorensen
Chestnut Mountain Resort may be a little long in the tooth, but new owners are pouring money into bringing it back to a state that's equal to the stunning scenery surrounding it.

Getting here may be a bit of a challenge, to say the least, but once you arrive -- mama mia! -- what a view. From many of the lodge's room windows and certainly from the Sunset Grille restaurant, your vista is one of huge, tree-covered hills leading down to the Mississippi River. In the summer and especially in the fall, the scene is eye-popping. And if you're lucky enough to be here in the winter, especially when it's snowing, the sights are no less stunning. New owners are sparing no expense in making this resort a year-round destination, and their first major investment is the Sunset Grille, which is worth the drive regardless of whether you plan on spending the weekend or just a couple of hours. It's a first-class restaurant, enhanced by a bank of picture-perfect windows across its facade and a huge outdoor deck that is a do-not-miss feature. Obviously, skiing is the chief winter lure, but there are things to do here in the summer, including a fun alpine slide, fantastic river cruises, miniature golf and bike rentals. As for the rooms, well, they've seen better days. The wear and tear on the furniture and carpeting is noticeable, but the accommodations are clean, the shower works well, and the beds aren't bad. You'll find watching television a bit frustrating, what with its grainy picture and old technology, but hopefully that's on the list of things for the next refurbishing wave. Rooms from $79, which seemed reasonable to us during our experience.
