Oak Street Beach

A popular spot for locals and tourists in Chicago, Oak Street Beach is part of the 1,200-acre Lincoln Park and hugs the shores of Lake Michigan near the Magnificent Mile skyscrapers. The rocky shore quickly gives way to a sandy bottom, and palm trees dot the sand. In summer, the water temperature is pretty warm, making it an attractive place for serious swimmers or those who just want to dip their toes in the water. Visitors get there by strolling through an underpass (where you'll walk past guys playing the violin for cash). Then, enjoy the variety of languages and cultures of your fellow swimmers. During the day, Chicago's diversity is clearly seen in the many nationalities of folks hanging out at the beach. Despite its popularity, the place never feels overcrowded. Peak time seems to be in the evening, when locals come out in droves to play league volleyball. Also popular, the ledge is a concrete strip running north from the beach and is used as a walking, running and biking path.
