Midwest Living Review
At Aroma Workshop in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, perfumers blend personal fragrances based on memorable scents you love. While walk-ins are welcome, reservations are recommended for a 40-minute appointment, especially on weekends. The $36 fee yields a 2-ounce bottle of hand-crafted fragrance. Clients sit at one of three testing bars lined with mini bottles of more than 100 scents categorized as floral, gourmand, nature and citrus. They take "bunny sniffs" of the color-coded bottles to choose what appeals to them most. Then perfumers blend variations of those selections in laboratory Pyrex flasks, make adjustments and wave dampened litmus papers under clients' noses until the personal scent is just right. Aroma Workshop owner and perfumer Tedd Neenan says, "Just let your nose be curious and explore memories through your sense of smell. Pick what reminds you of pleasant experiences, like the first time you smelled the ocean." Once you design your fragrance (and you can have more than one), Aroma Workshop keeps the formula on file. Clients call in and order online personally scented perfume, lotion, mist, and facial and body washes. The shop also carries designer fragrances; makes massage oils; and blends therapeutic products to heal acne, aid sleep and even repel mosquitoes. Monthly aromatherapy workshops and private fragrance blending parties held.
