Midwest Living Review
When you catch a glimpse of your slightly slumped self in the gold gilded mirrors, seated on a curvy couch at RM Champagne Salon, you can almost hear your mother admonishing you to “Sit up straight.” Fortunately, this chic, French-themed lounge inspired by style icon Grace Kelly doesn’t demand princess-quality posture. It’s easy to relax and still feel glam at this bubbly hotspot in Chicago’s West Loop.
Owner and award-winning sommelier Jason Wagner squelches any frou-frou impressions by wandering among the candlelit marble tables to chat with guests. Stylish servers are schooled in the international Champagne, cider, beer and handcrafted cocktail menus to put patrons who don’t know that RM stands for “Recoltant-Manipulant” (an estate-grown-and-produced champagne) at ease. Thorough explanations are offered in easy-to-understand, plain-speak language without a hint of attitude. All you have to do is sit back and sip (Champagnes start at $12 a glass).
From the menu of elegant small plates and entrees, we love the self-directed artisanal cheese platter. For $18, you get to choose three samples from blue, washed rind, soft, semisoft and hard cheeses. Other tasty food options include crepes, steak frites, roast chicken, ravioli and salads. The Plat De Mer seafood platter ($36) arrives on a footed silver tray laden with delish rock shrimp ceviche, oysters, sashimi and lobster deviled eggs. Finish sweet with the sizable soufflé trio ($18) or a plateful of bite-size desserts (six for $9). Tiaras are welcome; reservations are suggested.
