Midwest Living Review

Catey Sullivan
Hot Chocolate, best known for its desserts, offers a simple, sumptious burger that's not to be missed.

Hot Chocolate is a hopping, sparkling, animated restaurant known for decadent desserts. But to miss out on the burger they serve would be downright criminal. We arrived around 11:30 p.m. on a Friday night (the kitchen closes at midnight) to find the place jumping. Every table was filled (and the tables are very close together), and the whole place reverberated with animated conversations and a positive vibe. The service was fantastic: Despite the crowd, we were seated and given a menu promptly, and our waitress continued to be attentive all evening. We ordered the Hamburger (no fancy names -- just hamburger), which was served on a garlic toasted bun and came with organic bacon, four-year-old cheddar, house-made pickles, for $13, and, if you like, with a fried egg on top for $15. (We got the egg.) The egg was perfectly fried. It sat on top of the melted cheddar, which was evenly spread over the burger. The burger was substantial and topped with fresh lettuce and a juicy tomato. With the first bite, we were in love. The meat was juicy. It tasted rich but not overpowering; the bite of the cheddar came through as did the sweetness of the tomato. For dessert, we indulged in warm brioche doughnuts ($11), served as long sticks poking out of a glass of hot fudge sauce next to a plate of caramel corn. The caramel corn and fudge were both good, but the brioche doughnuts were overly sweet, and paired with the chocolate and popcorn, that sweetness was about enough to send us into sugar shock. In the future, we'll stick with the very rich, creamy namesake hot chocolate ($6). Hot Chocolate serves lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Hours vary by day; call or check the website for more information.
