Midwest Living Review

Dos Diablos, located in Chicago's West Loop, specializes in fajitas, tacos and enchiladas that are served in generous portions using quality ingredients.

This better-than-average Mexican restaurant keeps to the standards -- fajitas, tacos and enchiladas -- and does them quite well. The portions are generous, the ingredients fresh and the prices -- most entrees range from $11.95 to $15.95 -- quite fair for the neighborhood.Part of the fun of Dos Diablos is its imaginative decor, which is heavy on glazed red tile and features striking square light fixtures that cast a golden glow on the place. The booths along the wall provide intimacy, but the restaurant can easily accommodate larger parties by pushing tables together. Outdoor sidewalk dining is also an option. We sampled two entrees: the Senor Hambre (two soft chicken tacos and two crispy beef tacos, $14.95) and the steak taco special ($18.95). The former was very good -- fresh, brimming with tomatoes, and served with lettuce, sour cream and guacamole on the side. The steak tacos came with white onions, cilantro and fried green onions, a nice variation on the traditional taco. The restaurant has a full drink menu, including more than two dozen different types of tequilas and beer and wine imported from Chile, Argentina and Spain. We highly recommend the house margarita, which costs $9 but is an ample size that's not watered down by too much ice. The street is loaded with restaurants and bars, and parking is at a premium other than dropping $20-plus at one of the downtown garages. Your best bet is the $12 valet parking.
