Midwest Living Review

The unique fillings that go inside these pastry-encrusted delicacies make for a happy surprise in every bite.

The long line of locals outside of the 5411 Empanadas' food truck doesn't lie. These handmade Argentinean empanadas are worth the wait. Baked, rather than fried, each is encrusted in a flaky pastry wrapped around feel-good fillings like ham and cheese, caramelized onion, and Nutella and banana. You can't beat the price -- $1.99 each -- but be sure to try a couple because it will take a few to make a meal. And if you're someone who likes to dip, the truck's chimichurri sauce is the real deal; grab a cup for 50 cents more. We tried three empanadas: cheese and spinach, ham and cheese, and BBQ chicken, along with a serving of chimichurri sauce. They were excellent -- the empanada dough was soft and flaky, and the fillings were wonderful. We're guessing they use fairly high-end ingredients; the cheese in the ham and cheese seemed particularly impressive. It was dense, white, a little salty. A definite favorite. Winning high marks on aesthetics, the crew -- three friends originally from Argentina -- have created a different pastry fold for each variety. Their baby blue set of wheels, once an old ice cream truck, brightens any street. If you're interested in finding the truck, check out the website, where the crew lists each day's destination a week in advance. The road is not the only place to get these treats: If you're having a party, $20 per person will get you professional staff and two ovens cranking out all the empanadas your guests can eat. One way or another, these flaky little pastries are worth trying.
