Midwest Living Review

Diana McMillen
Hip and sophisticated, yet totally approachable, this art-theme boutique hotel in River North brings some whimsy to the hotel scene.

A doorman, dressed in Rat Pack-era garb, directs us inside the 261-room Hotel Palomar on the corner of Illinois and State streets. We walk on the polished floor past the living room, where guests sip wine at an evening reception and savor coffee and tea in the morning, to the main desk with its glowing surface. Opened in March 2010, Palomar is a compact hotel full of extra touches, from small lighted hallway alcoves holding three small succulents to the sun deck off the glassed-in pool on the 17th floor to the ever-essential free in-room WiFi. Big crimson poppies decorate the carpet of our room. Two terry robes, one zebra stripe and one leopard print, hang in the closet. Around the room hangs artwork depicting Chicago's storied 1893 Columbian Exposition. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the room, along with the poolside deck, give us a rooftop view of the city. Even the free fitness room offers a view, you can jog on the treadmill and look down on the street. (Then grab an apple on your way out.) Their guest programs include: Forgot It? We Got It! Program (with the usual toiletries, as well as computer chargers, humidifiers, static guards and a night light), Goldfish program (a fish visits during your stay), or see the city on early jogs two mornings a week with assistant general manager Amanda Parsons. It's located near two Starbucks, a Nordstrom, two blocks from Michigan Avenue. Next to the Red Line train, the hotel is a 20-minute ride to either Wrigley Field or U.S. Cellular Field. From $199.
