Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
Careful, classy touches characterize this boutique hotel in the Loop.

We've stayed at the Monaco many times through the years, and this Kimpton hotel never disappoints. From the friendly doormen outside to the cool jazz in the soaring-ceilinged lobby to the soft mattresses in the guest rooms and granite accents in the baths, visitors feel pampered here. The location -- a block south of the Chicago River and a block and a half northeast of the storied Chicago Theater -- makes the Monaco an easy choice for couples and girlfriends looking to shop and play in the Loop. You can walk to Macy's on State Street, to Water Tower Place and the Hancock Observatory within minutes. Located on 14 floors, the 191 guest rooms have fresh-looking, comfortable bedding and plenty of pillows, plus a bench at the foot of the bed for luggage. A big flat-screen TV and large desk cater to travelers needing to work and unwind, and the staff here always smiles a formal greeting. Guests also can use an on-site 24-hour fitness center and get free coffee in the lobby in the morning. The Monaco is pet-friendly, too, and a resident goldfish lives in a bubbly tank on the check-in desk. Our one quibble: Wi-Fi access is $10 a day, and our attempts to use the free Wi-Fi in the lobby were unsuccessful because the signal was too weak. But showing true hospitality, the staff called tech support -- and offered to let us use their computer behind the check-in desk. Room rates from $185.
