Midwest Living Review

Kit Bernardi
This independently owned Michigan Avenue hotel blends an historic exterior with a contemporary and comfortable interior.

Located on the corner of Huron Street and Michigan Avenue, this independently owned hotel occupies a prime spot along Chicago's Magnificent Mile. It attracts both business and leisure travelers who can find pretty much any amenity they could want within walking distance or within the hotel itself. Though you wouldn't expect it from its 1920s red brick Renaissance exterior, the Allerton inside is contemporary and minimalist. Rooms are comfortable--not in a plush, romantic style, but with a functional, calming aesthetic. Think espresso-color woods and upholstery in grays, creams and cool blues. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, pillow-top beds and 400-thread count linens. Amply sized standard doubles begin at $129 (very reasonable for downtown Chicago); king suites with sitting rooms and large bedrooms are $169 to $189. Parking, on the other hand, runs $48 a day, so figure that in the rate if you are bringing a car. There's also an extra charge for in-room Internet access, which is annoying even if not that expensive. The lobby area is chic and contemporary, with lots of natural light and the hotel's original 1920s checkerboard tile floor. Public spaces include the M Avenue restaurant and an adjacent cocktail lounge, a business center, banquet facilities on the 25th floor with sweeping city views, and a 24-hour fitness center on an upper floor with lots of windows and light. The hotel has done a nice job maintaining the building's intricate masonry detail, arched windows and red-tiled roof--important in a city that treasures its striking architecture.
