Midwest Living Review
In a clock-tower-crowned corner in quaint Crystal Lake's downtown, Benedict's La Strata has breakfast down to 65 eggy, fluffy, toasty dishes. And it serves another 30 lunch items, including grilled paninis, wraps and salads. The cheery French bistro, decorated with poster art and ceramic roosters, attracts local business people and leisurely lunchers. A Mediterranean dinner menu is served Thursday through Saturday starting at 5 p.m. Open daily 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., choose from hot cereals, skillets, breakfast sandwiches, omelets, frittatas, eggs Benedict, breakfast casseroles and stratas, pancakes, waffles, French toasts, traditional egg breakfasts and homemade quiches. Prices range from $5 oatmeal to $15 surf and turf eggs Benedict. The filling Ms. Cindy's cherry-stuffed French toast is an egg-bread pillow stuffed with cream cheese and tart, chunky Door County cherries. Warm maple syrup comes with, but this dish is delish without it. In summer, eat outside under the awning or grab lunch to go for a picnic at Crystal Lake's Main Beach (approximately 1 mile from downtown on Dole Avenue). There are burgers, grilled paninis ($8), wraps and entree salads ($9-$13). Especially tasty is the grilled Mediterranean chicken breast sandwich topped with a cucumbers, tomatoes, Feta cheese and kalamata olive mix, $8. Service is slow, but polite on busy weekends. It's worth the wait.
