Midwest Living Review

An elegant mansion, with service to match, makes this a great B&B choice.

Beall Mansion's owners have their B&B business down to a science -- though they make it feel more like art. The aesthetics at this elegant and well-maintained mansion north of downtown are matched by pampering, attentive service. The 1902 home brims with quality antiques -- until you get to the guest rooms, where antiques are interspersed with welcome modern amenities. An antique armoire, for example, hides a flat-screen TV; the bathroom offers all the latest luxuries, from a whirlpool tub to a huge shower with glass doors. The bedroom is large enough for a spacious seating area, even with a king bed. When you book a room, you'll receive an e-mail asking for your preferences in lodging and breakfast foods, how you take your coffee and so on. When you arrive, the owner appears dressed in a tuxedo and takes on the role of a Victorian butler, answering "my pleasure" to every request, which can come off as classy or corny depending on your point of view. But there's no denying that the service aspect is genuine. Guests are offered a tour of the house, a bit of history, a welcoming glass of champagne or sparkling cider, and an invitation to enjoy the 24-hour chocolate buffet. Breakfast is a five-course affair, beginning with fresh fruit and a Mississippi Sunrise (orange and cranberry juices), followed by home-baked pastries, French toast with pralines and a raspberry torte. For a quick in-and-out place to stay, the Beall Mansion may be a bit much. But if you want a luxury getaway, you could get used to the great service. Doubles start at $119 (check the website for specials).
