Midwest Living Review

This gem of a spot resides in a former blacksmith shop.

A Bushel and a Peck is the type of place tourists hope to stumble upon--a true hidden treasure. Located in an 1800s blacksmith shop, the building has no heat or running water, but the owner keeps a fire going in an old wood stove on cold days. Open weekends May through October, the store is packed with locally based food and unique items on the main floor and beautifully displayed antiques upstairs. Chickens cluck away in a coop out back, and their eggs are sold in the store, but most everything else comes from local vendors. You'll find honey, pickles, jams, soups, soaps, gift cards, brooms, embroidered towels, candles, and other fun gift items. Old newspaper articles and photos tell the building's story in the front corner of the store, alongside the original blacksmith's forge. The shop is in the middle in farm country--rolling pastures as far as the eye can see make for a picturesque stop.
