Whitewater Rafting in Wisconsin

Rafting in Wisconsin? You Betcha!
By Barbara Humeston, Contributing Editor, Midwest Living

For some of the Midwest's best white-water adventures, head north to float the Wolf, Menominee and Peshtigo rivers in northeast Wisconsin (north of Green Bay), along with the unruly St. Louis River in northeast Minnesota (near Duluth). In a normal year, each river serves up everything from white-knuckle rapids to calm, sun-drenched stretches. Of course, white-water rafting in the Midwest and across the nation depends on the rainfall and weather. Water flows fastest in spring. By mid- to late summer, water levels usually drop, making for more leisurely floats. Be sure to check on river conditions before making reservations with outfitters who supply gear and sometimes guides.

The most popular rafting section of the crystal-clear Wolf winds through Langlade County about 60 miles northwest of Green Bay. One of our favorite wilderness getaways and a good base for rafters is Jesse's Wolf River Lodge. Three outfitters rent rafts and gear for trips down the Wolf. Contact the Langlade County Extension Office for a list (715/627-6236).

On the Menominee River, guides lead rafters on trips that buck the turbulent currents in a mist-shrouded gorge. Argosy Adventures (715/251-3886) and Kosir's Rapid Rafts (715/757-3431).

Neophytes quickly become experts on the Peshtigo River while covering several miles of exciting white water. Outfitters provide helmets and safety lessons, along with guides in spring. Kosir's Rapid Rafts (715/757-3431) and Thornton's Raft Co. (715/757-3311).

Superior White Water's guides start you out with a safety orientation, then escort you through the spectacular white water of the St. Louis River. For some rafters, the highlight is the surge off Electric Ledge. For others, it's the quieter paddling downstream. Superior White Water (218/384-4637).
