Cedarburg Getaway

This tiny Wisconsin town offers an abundance of great shops.

In the post-holiday doldrums? Feed your shopping bug with a getaway to tiny Cedarburg, Wisconsin (20 miles north of Milwaukee). Some 70 stores, including a dozen antiques shops, line the six-block-long downtown, with its 19th-century limestone and cream-colored brick buildings, soaring church spires and two historic mills.

Cedar Creek Settlement, with more than 30 shops, artists' studios and restaurants in five vintage stone structures, anchors the north end of Washington Avenue, the main thoroughfare. Shoppers take home pottery, quilts, hand-forged fireplace tools, folk art and glassware.

Photos hardly do justice to this eastern Wisconsin community, but the town's website shows you some intriguing highlights. You'll also find a variety of useful trip-planning tools, including maps, lists of shops, restaurants and lodgings, and even a schedule for the Cedarburg hotel-to-shopping-area shuttle.
