De Smet, South Dakota
On this website, you can click on a photo of the cover of each book for a synopsis of its content and which events in Laura's life inspired the book.
Laura was entering adolescence when the Ingalls family moved to this prairie town (90 miles northwest of Sioux Falls). It was here the family finally settled in for an extended stay.
This website provides information about and directions to several area Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society attractions. Among them is the Surveyor's House where the family spent its first Dakota winter. You also can visit the home Laura's father, Charles, built in 1887. It contains many Ingalls family artifacts and belongings.
You'll find listings for various Laura Ingalls Wilder events on the site, as well as directions to the memorial site where there are five still-living cottonwood trees that Pa Ingalls planted, one for each of his children. You also can shop online for posters and books, and link to the De Smet web page for community information.
