Bullock Hotel, Deadwood, South Dakota
Seth Bullock, the first sheriff of this once-rowdy Black Hills mining settlement, built a three-story red sandstone hotel in 1895 after his hardware store burned down. Seth was so fond of it that after he died, some guests reported seeing his ghost walking the halls.
He must be pleased today. The hotel has been restored to much the way it looked in the 19th century. Original woodwork and reproduction antique furniture adorn the 36 suites.
In Bully's, the downstairs restaurant, a fire crackles in the big tile fireplace. Slot machines chirp and tinkle in every nook and cranny of the lobby and other public areas (legalized gambling came to Deadwood in 1989).
