Sauder Village, Ohio
Sauder Village is an 80-acre complex in Archbold, Ohio (40 miles west of Toledo). This living-history settlement celebrates rural life in the 1800s. Eric Sauder, founder of the Sauder Woodworking Company, established the village in 1976, and the third generation of the Sauder family still oversees the complex.
More than three dozen buildings, all staffed with costumed interpreters, make up the village. You can visit the log schoolhouse, jail, barber shop, bakery, general store, grist mill and quilt shop, in addition to a museum. You'll see professional crafters at work daily, including a potter, blacksmith, glassblower, tinsmith, silversmith and basket maker. The village also schedules special events, from apple-butter making in September to a woodcarvers' show and sale in October.
Visitors stay at the 35-room timber-frame Sauder Heritage Inn or the village campground. You can eat hearty family-style meals in the Barn Restaurant or buy snacks and sandwiches at the casual cafe.
The village and campground are open mid-April through late October. Admission charged. The inn and restaurant stay open year-round.
