Ohio's Lake Erie Shore
From the quiet Marblehead Peninsula that juts into Lake Erie you almost can hear the thunder of roller coasters at Cedar Point across the bay in Sandusky. The longtime amusement park, as well as bustling resort communities and intriguing islands, draw thousands of visitors to this stretch of shore each year.
Ferries zoom to islands offshore from Port Clinton, where upscale motels line the lake, and from Sandusky, with fancy hotels at the Cedar Point property. But you'll discover quiet retreats at lower prices if you're willing to stay in the community of Marblehead east of Port Clinton; off the Cedar Point grounds in eastern Sandusky; or in neighboring Huron. Family-friendly motels abound in these areas.
You're just minutes from inexpensive attractions such as Sandusky's Merry-Go-Round Museum, with its glittery carousel figures. Visits to area lighthouses and tour of wineries are free.
Many vacationers opt to spend one day at Cedar Point amusement park. Another day they travel to more subdued Kelleys Island.
There's no need to spend the extra money to take your car to the island. Most visitors hop off the boat and rent bicycles anyway or golf carts. They're best for exploring the island's sunny byways.
For a perfect lakeside picnic, grab a takeout hot dog or a whopping fresh perch sandwich at the Water Street Cafe.
