North Dakota Shopping

Experience the history and diversity of North Dakota through its many shopping adventures.

Valley City

After taking the scenic bridge tour that showcases eight historic bridges that cross the winding Sheyenne River, head downtown and check out the plethora of antique shopping options. A 25,000-square-foot antiques mall complements several downtown shops with great finds in antiques, crafts and collectibles.

Ethnic diversity and the multi-cultural background of inhabitants in the area contribute to the shopping selection you will find in Valley City.

Downtown Fargo

Downtown Fargo, through a number of revitalization programs, has become the city's hot spot. There are more than 1,100 businesses in historic downtown Fargo and more than 80 eating establishments within the Central Business District.

The downtown area includes such stores as Zandbroz Variety, a unique store that offers books, toys, quality paper and pens, body products, housewares and gifts. It's also home to Dakota Soda, an old-fashioned sweet shop.

Also downtown are the historic Fargo Theatre and the Hotel Donaldson, which was built in 1893 and renovated to its current state in 2000. The new hotel features spacious rooms, fine dining, a rooftop bar and art displays throughout.

If you venture outside the downtown district, you'll find all sorts of shopping throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area. And there are more than 200 restaurants in the metro area.

This Old Hat

In historic downtown Mandan, there's a craft taking place that isn't often seen any more in the retail world. Shannon and Tina Reichenberg, owners of This Old Hat, take up to 40 hours to design and make a cowboy hat. The business turns out about 70 hats a year, matching each hat to the personality of the owner. The lengthy process brings in orders for custom hats from across the United States.

The business is located on Mandan's Main Street. The interior walls are covered in barn wood and a corral surrounds the cappuccino bar. The old tin ceiling and hardwood floors are restored to their former glory. Western murals decorate some walls and there's also a saddle maker located on the second floor and a boot repair shop on the balcony. The Reichenberg's also renovate hats that are dirty, damaged or faded.

Also located along Main Street are Mandan Drug and its old-fashioned soda fountain, Lindy Sue's homemade candies, and the old train depot, which is home to Five Nations Art and the Dakota Territory Trading Company.
