Ice-Fishing in North Dakota

Every winter, eager anglers from across the Midwest come to Devils Lake for ice fishing with expert guides.

Every winter, eager anglers from across the Midwest arrive in the little North Dakota town of Devils Lake (90 miles northwest of Grand Forks) for ice fishing with expert guides. On outings worth bragging about back home, these guides show you where to reel in perch and walleye from the huge frozen lake that shares the town's name.

Don't worry about driving to this pristine north country. You can board Amtrak's Empire Builder train in Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis or anywhere along the line for this "Perch Express" packaged trip.

A fishing guide greets you at the Devils Lake depot and drives you to the nearby lodge and pine cabins of Woodland Resort on the snowy shores of Creel Bay. Soon, you're in a van or on a snowmobile traveling to a fishing shanty on the frozen 35-mile-long lake.

The resort freezes your fish for your trip home or fixes it for dinner at the Cove restaurant. That's where everyone gathers to unreel whopping fish tales.
