Founded in the 1850s by wealthy English immigrant Henry Shaw, the preserve is just a few minutes southeast of downtown St. Louis. You can stroll 79 acres of horticultural displays ranging from a shrub maze to butterfly, herb, orchid and rose gardens. The 14-acre Seiwa-en garden centered on a tranquil lake is the largest Japanese strolling garden in the Western hemisphere.
