Dining Along Minnesota's North Shore

Along Lake Superior

Lake Superior laps at the deck beside the Angry Trout Cafe in the North Shore town of Grand Marais, Minnesota, about two-thirds of the way along the 150 miles of shore between Duluth and the Canadian border). From tables at the water's edge, diners gaze past the breakwater and the lighthouse to the horizon, where the lake wells up to meet the blue sky.

Lake trout, tossed in olive oil and lightly seasoned, arrives perfectly grilled beside a big, steaming mound of wild rice. "It's fresh; that's what you're tasting," says cafe owner George Wilkes. "Here on the shore, that's a pretty good start."

A local fisherman netted the trout that morning. A Minnesota lake nurtured the wild rice.
