Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

The website of America's first national lakeshore has been handpicked by our editors to help you plan your next trip.

From maps and weather forecasts to links to area communities' sites, you'll find plenty of information about accommodations and restaurants.

The dunes and water-sculpted cliffs of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore loom above Lake Superior for 40 miles along the north shore of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Near tiny Grand Marais, the park's eastern gateway (about 100 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie), the park's Grand Sable Dunes reach 200 feet high.

Although the dunes are impressive, they pale next to the cliffs that are the park's main attraction. Lake Superior pounds against sheer rock faces streaked with shades of red, yellow, blue and green, the work of mineral-rich water seeping from the stone. The lake has added its own artwork, carving sculptures such as the turreted Miners Castle, plus arches and caves.

Click on "Plan Your Visit" on the home page, then on "Munising Visitors Bureau" for information about getting a dramatic up-close look at the cliffs from one of the excursion boats that Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises operates. Munising is just west of the park.

Use "Activities" for links to a variety of information on recreational pursuits at the lakeshore. For instance, one of the links (Hiking) recommends nearly 20 hikes within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, including an easy paved trail from the picnic area to Miners Castle and a more strenuous nine-mile loop along the cliffs.
