Peaceful Places
From Our Senior Travel Editor, Linda Ryberg
For many of us, year's end is a time to take stock of the past and mull resolutions for the future. If you prefer a change of venue for such meditations, consider an inspirational destination such as one of these attractive houses of worship:
Oak Park, Illinois Unity Temple is a simple, stately work of art, and one of Frank Lloyd Wright's favorite commissions in this Chicago suburb (nine miles west of the Loop). This 1905 cubist building is open to the public for tours sponsored by the Unity Temple Restoration Foundation, or you may attend services on Sunday with the Unitarian Universalist congregation that gathers here.
Nashua, Iowa Little Brown Church in the Vale (right) is a tiny and simple gathering place in a wooded area near this small town 160 miles northeast of Des Moines. The structure dates to the 1800s, and has garnered such a reputation with its miniature charm that it attracts 60,000 visitors each year, has hosted 71,000 weddings and inspired its own song.
Cincinnati, Ohio Admirers flock to the Episcopal Christ Church Cathedral today as they've done since it was built in 1817. A six-story Romanesque-style parish house, the Gothic-style chapel and 14 stained-glass windows in the sanctuary make this complex a gem. You can attend one of the cathedral's daily services for a peek inside.
