Fall Iowa Art Tour

By Hannah Agran

Take a Midwestern scenic drive that's filled with places to shop for pottery, photography, glass, paintings and sculptures. Three pairs of Midwest Living writers and graphic artists explored arts and crafts trails in Iowa, Michigan and Kentucky. For extra fun, each team carried a scavenger hunt list. Come along on their trips, and then check out their photo slide shows. Feeling inspired? Print a blank copy of the scavenger hunt, so you and a friend can take your own creative drive.

Hitting the road

Photo Editor Tara Okerstrom-Bauer and I leave Des Moines and drive across central Iowa to the state's northwest corner, home to a thriving arts community. The biggest local highway, US-71, cuts across a patchwork of corn and soybean fields. Tara and I weren't sure if we'd find this part of Iowa pretty. Turns out, it's gorgeous. Bands of green, gold and blue unfurl past our windows as we zip across the countryside.
