New Harmony, Indiana

Turn back time with a visit to this quaint Indiana community.

Could it be you're a time traveler sent here from the present day? History blends so easily with everyday life in this small, serene Wabash River town (20 miles west of Evansville, Indiana), that you slow into the pace of long-ago days.

A springtime explosion of tulips and daffodils surrounds rough-hewn homes and brick buildings that have stood for nearly 200 years. As costumed interpreters help them relive New Harmony's past, wide-eyed youngsters don't realize they're getting a history lesson.

What a lively story it is, filled with idealists and dreamers. Initially, this was a communal utopian society settled in 1814 by Lutheran separatists known as Harmonists. Later, the town was sold to a rich Scot who established an oasis for educators, scientists and writers.

Families and couples seem to reconnect on long walks and bike rides. You can stop for an ice cream soda in the compact downtown, and walk a bush-lined maze to a tiny temple.

Many visitors headquarter at the New Harmony Inn, with spacious rooms and Shaker-style furnishings. Across the lawn, the glass-enclosed heated pool shimmers, encouraging a leisurely family swim before dinner. It's then you realize you've found your own utopia.
