Indiana's Turkey Run State Park
You have to crane your head back pretty far to take in the colorful autumn foliage along some of the hiking trails piercing west-central Indiana's Turkey Run State Park (65 miles west of Indianapolis). The park along Sugar Creek just east of the Wabash River is home to some of the largest trees you'll see this side of California's redwoods, and the foliage begins several stories up. Most of these oaks, hickories, sycamores and black walnuts matured into giants because they stand on land that was too rugged to log during the 1800s.
Other trails lead deep into narrow sandstone gorges where you'll find groves of Canadian hemlocks, remnants of the last ice age. The rugged beauty of this fractured, forested landscape attracts not only hikers and bicyclists, but also canoists. Paddlers are almost certain to pass under one of the park's red covered bridges.
You can overnight in Turkey Run Inn's cabins or lodge rooms, and dine on hearty favorites including fried chicken and stewed tomatoes in the dining room.
