Indiana's Inn at Aberdeen
Valparaiso, Indiana
The white clapboard Queen Anne peeks through branches from a gentle knoll in the quiet country southwest of Valparaiso (50 miles southeast of Chicago).
The candles are one of the special touches to make you feel welcome even before you reach your room.
The inn marks the entrance to the Village of Aberdeen, built around a golf course. You can sip morning coffee together in a gazebolike solarium at the front of the inn. Guests help themselves to evening snacks and beverages there.
Music fills the soaring foyer, where a brass chandelier, graceful staircase and light-yellow walls create a serene setting. In the 11 guest suites (all with luxurious baths and whirlpools), Victorian-inspired decor features dark-wood armoires and writing tables. Fireplaces warm nine of the rooms.
The inn becomes a supper club once a month. For intimate five-course dinners by candlelight, the chef sometimes prepares pork tenderloin with maple plum sauce or prime rib roasted with garlic and rosemary. In the morning, you can linger in the sunny breakfast room over a full gourmet meal that might include Belgian waffles.
As the hushed snow falls, an evening beside the fire can be almost as memorable as a visit to Scotland, home of the port city for which this inn was named.
