Bishop Hill, Illinois

More than 150 years ago, a band of religious dissidents from Sweden founded Bishop Hill on the northwestern Illinois prairie.

You don't have to be Swedish to visit Bishop Hill, but you'll probably particularly appreciate the history of this community (40 miles southeast of the Quad Cities). That historic settlement remains rich in Swedish heritage. As you stroll the streets, you can imagine those early days, when the religious communal society prospered.

The village of about 140 residents hosts thousands each year. Even Swedish royalty have visited. Costumed interpreters staff three of the nearly dozen structures remaining from the old colony, most of which face the shady town square. You can tour several of the handsome brick and clapboard buildings, which recall the colorful heritage that dates to 1846.

At the Heritage Museum, a film details the colony's history. Free guidebooks at the State of Illinois Bishop Hill Museum direct visitors on walking tours. Be sure to see the huge Colony Church, which reflects the communal society's belief in simplicity. Afterwards, browse the Swedish crafts and baked goods in shops and sample ethnic specialties at restaurants, including The Red Oak Luncheonboard and P.L. Johnson's Dining Room. Both serve Swedish meatballs, as well as tasty beef and chicken sandwiches on fresh Swedish rye bread.

Scheduled celebrations throughout the year include Ag Days, with agricultural demonstrations, children's games, music and an old-time baseball game (September 28 and 29 this year); Christmas Market (November 29, 30 and December 1 and December 7 and 8 this year); and Lucia Nights (December 13 and 14 this year).

Bishop Hill is about 25 miles south of I-80 from Geneseo (exit 19). Open year-round, though many of the privately owned businesses close for the winter (309/927-3345 or 309/927-3899).
