Here is a great reason to keep hiking in winter: La Salle Falls. It is one of 14 stunning waterfalls along 13-plus miles of hiking trails in Illinois' Starved Rock State Park (left). La Salle can freeze into a 20-foot-wide glistening wall that you can actually walk behind. It's a veil of ice with a beautiful light-blue tinge, located just 90 miles southwest of Chicago. Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park (60 miles southeast of Columbus) offers its own off-season rewards. Amid the park's cliffs, caves and forest are roughly 100 waterfalls. The star is Ash Cave Falls, which forms icicles hanging like teeth 50 feet in the air. Hocking Hills State Park
