The historic Hotel Pattee celebrates the heritage of the Midwest through 40 individually decorated guest rooms and suites. The hard part is choosing your surroundings: Do you prefer the charming quilts and country accessories of the 1913 Farmhouse Room, for instance, or the lovely Arts and Crafts furniture of the Gustav Stickley Room? (Stickley was born to German parents in Osceola, Wisconsin, in 1858).
The 1913 hotel, elaborately renovated in the 1990s, reopened under new ownership in 2008. Special events, such as dances, brunches and girlfriend getaways, are offered some weekends. The hotel is the main reason to visit Perry (population 9,500), but Des Moines is just 40 miles southeast. (515) 465-3511
