French Lick, Indiana: French Lick Resort
Step into the Victorian-opulent lobby at West Baden Springs Hotel, and you'll know that you've arrived somewhere amazing. First-time guests often just stop and stare, awestruck, at the 600-foot glass dome. Hailed as the eighth wonder of the world when the hotel opened in 1902, the dome arches six stories overhead.
Through the 1930s, this hotel and neighboring French Lick Springs Hotel (about 140 miles southwest of Indianapolis) reigned as the fanciest of 40-some resorts built around the area's mineral springs.
