These saucy potatoes are a great side dish for herbed pork chops or a thick, juicy steak. The potatoes are topped with a sophisticated nutmeg and clove cream sauce.

  • 2 pounds tiny new potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • Dash ground cloves
  • Dash ground nutmeg
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese (1 ounce)
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

  1. Scrub potatoes. Cut larger potatoes into quarters. Place in steamer basket over boiling water. Cover; steam for 12 to 15 minutes or just until tender.
  2. For sauce: In a medium saucepan, cook onion in butter or margarine until onion is tender, but not brown. Add flour and stir until smooth. Stir in the salt, pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and bay leaf. Add the milk all at once. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Stir in the Gruyere and Parmesan cheeses. Heat and stir until cheeses melt. Remove and discard the bay leaf.
  3. Arrange potatoes on individual plates or in a serving bowl. Spoon the sauce over potatoes. Makes 6 servings.
