Rapid Creek Cidery serves its apple-kissed Gold Fashioned with an extra-large ice cube so the drink doesn't get diluted--but of course ordinary cubes will work, too.

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 1 ounce semisweet hard cider, such as original Angry Orchard or Stella Artois's Cidre
  • 1/4 ounce demerara syrup*
  • 5 dashes aromatic bitters, such as Angostura
  • 1 Good-quality preserved cherries, such as Luxardo**

  1. In a tall glass or cocktail shaker, combine bourbon, cider, demerara syrup and bitters over ice. Stir until very cold. Strain into a rocks glass; add a single large ice cube. Garnish with a cherry.

  • *Demerara Syrup In a screw-top jar, combine equal amounts of Demerara sugar and water. Cover and shake well until sugar is dissolved.

  • **Shopping tip Italian Luxardo cherries are the original maraschino--an elegant and delicious splurge. Tillen Farms' Bada Bing Cherries are an affordable alternative. (Bonus: The syrup in either is fabulous in cocktails or club soda.) Buy online or at well-stocked supermarkets or liquor stores.
