Traditionally, Irish bakers made this classic, sweet quick bread in white or brown loaves. Our recipe is for brown bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 1 3/4 cups milk

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flours, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Stir in raisins. Make well in dry ingredients.
  2. Add the milk; stir till moistened.
  3. Turn into a greased 9x1 1/2-inch round baking pan. Bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or till the top is browned. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and cool thoroughly.
  4. Wrap bread in foil or clear plastic wrap, and store overnight before serving.
