  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon five-spice powder or apple pie spice
  • 4 cups fresh fruit, such as seeded, peeled and cubed papaya; peeled and sliced kiwifruit; fresh pineapple chunks and/or thinly sliced star fruit (carambola)
  • Fresh mint (optional)

  1. For the fruit syrup: In a small saucepan, mix orange juice, sugar and five-spice powder. Bring to boiling, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat; simmer the mixture, uncovered, for 10 minutes.
  2. In large bowl, toss together assorted papaya, kiwifruit, pineapple, starfruit and hot syrup, gently stirring to mix. Cover and chill for up to 6 hours. Before serving, garnish the fruit with fresh mint or shaved coconut, if you like. Makes 6 servings.
