Lake Metigoshe has long been THE lake getaway for folks in a big chunk of North Dakota. It sits in one of those odd quirks of geography that seems to have dropped an alien landscape onto the prairie. A large swath of woods and wetlands sits in the Turtle Mountains, a plateau above the town of Bottineau. Nestled within is Lake Metigoshe and the Twin Oaks Resort on its shore. Twin Oaks’ setup is roomy and comfortable, even if quite basic and a little dated. A full-service restaurant overlooks the lake and serves a functional lineup of burgers, fries, sandwiches and fried fish. On the night of our weeknight visit, service was exceptionally slow, even though only three tables were occupied. Guest rooms are outfitted with furnishings on par with a discount chain motel. Twin Oaks’ setting is excellent, with its boat docks (available for guest use) right outside the restaurant and start park hiking trails right down the road.
