With its location near almost nothing (an hour from Jamestown), Dakota Sun Gardens is one of those places you really have to want to visit. And plenty of people do. During the garden season, bus tours are common at this private residence that opens its grounds to tours and tastings of the wines made by owners Bruce and Merleen Gussiaas. Bruce makes an informative tour guide as he leads visitors through numerous beds of plants that have proven their mettle by surviving on the harsh prairie under Bruce’s no-pampering gardening philosophy. His innovation is on display in pieces of metal artwork around the property and in a pair of old wooden granaries converted into pleasant gazebo-style structures, complete with a burbling fountain nearby. The Gussiaas’ make and serve their own wine here, too, with a focus on sweet wines and novelties like a chocolate raspberry wine that’s especially popular. A large deck provides a welcome spot to sit in the shade and sip wine and enjoy a light lunch made by Merleen.
