A recent major renovation transformed this 1926 Wichita landmark into a modern showplace with terrific upscale accommodations. The retrofitted building looks spectacular, with cozy seating in the lobby and hall and landscape art that looks like fine batik. The Ambassador epitomizes casual elegance with shades of purple and gray accentuated with calming neutrals.
Amenities in the 117 quiet, spacious guest rooms (rates from $119) include a locked mini-refrigerator, ultracomfortable linens and nightly turndown service. A frosted-glass pocket door separates the sink from the oversize, beautifully tiled shower and toilet area. Our eighth-floor room provided pretty views of downtown streetscapes and the Intrust Bank Arena. This is a visitor-friendly location. Lobby staff is welcoming and helpful, and the hotel holds a small exercise room stocked with towels and bottled water.
The on-site Siena Tuscan Steakhouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Morning meals range from massive three-egg omelets ($12) to a deconstructed yogurt, fruit and granola parfait served with an English muffin or toast ($8) and a decadent French Toast Bananas Foster ($13). For $6, you get a bottomless glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Lunch and dinner up the ante with sandwiches, salads, steaks and seafood.
