Despite its name, you won’t find anything related to Lewis and Clark at the Meriwether Trade and Gift Shop. However, if you're looking for a souvenir to commemorate your travels in the Peace Garden State, this is a good place to go. Opened in October 2012, the gift shop carries a little something for everybody, with an emphasis on North Dakota T-shirts, mugs, keychains and other tchotchkes.
The unassuming exterior belies a clean, organized, well-lit space inside where owners Scott and Roma Newton infuse their personalities into the offerings. Scott’s original graphic designs grace much of the North Dakota-themed merchandise; Roma adds a feminine touch to the inventory with an array of chunky jewelry, sparkly purses and country-chic clothing. Ask them about upcoming events; since opening the store, they’ve hosted a prom fashion show and a dinner with The Virginian James Drury.
This being a small, family-run shop with owners who balance a variety of obligations, customers might occasionally arrive to find the doors locked during business hours. We couldn’t get in on our first attempt at noon on a Friday, but Roma showed up soon after.
