If you think beer and pizza are best downed downtown, get ready to change your mind. At 450 North Brewing outside Columbus, you’ll find toothsome brick-oven pizzas and a quality selection of brewed-on-site beers surrounded by acres and acres of farmland—beginning with the 12-acre vineyard that fuels Simmons Winery, the business' wine-production arm.
Located along County Road 450 North about 5 miles east of Indiana’s most architecturally driven city, 450 North Brewery pours sample flights of its brews at $7.50 for five tastes, $9 for six and $10 for seven. Or you can go all in on a single pint or growler of Wagon Wheel hefeweizen, Copperhead Road Ale or Pothole Porter. Complement your quaff with delicious pizza selections like the Hawaiian Luau, Super Supreme or Mexican Fiesta. All pizzas are large 16-inch sizes only ($19.99 each), but that just allows more room for plenty of the fresh, flavorful toppings. You can also enjoy an Italian meatball sub ($6.99) or smoked pulled pork sandwich ($6.99) while you check out the vineyard and the classic rural Indiana decor that includes vintage photos of the property.
Owner Brenda Simmons will be glad to give you the rundown on what’s happening in the pictures, but you’ll have to catch her first—neighbors quickly discovered this year-old brewery and its family-friendly dining, and the smallish rooms are often packed. Expansion plans are underway; in the meantime, you could do a lot worse than passing your wait with a glass of Simmons’ award-winning wine.
