As soon as my entree arrived, a woman sitting near me pointed at it and asked our waiter, “What is that? It looks great!” “Cowgirl Benedict,” he replied. “It’s one of our most popular brunch items.”
Cowgirl Benedict ($13) turns out to be a concoction of skillet potatoes, chicken-fried steak and a fried egg topped with red chile hollandaise sauce and sliced fresh avocado. A great mixture of crispy, crunchy and creamy and totally satisfying. Not an egg fan? The fried chicken and waffles ($12) is another favorite, and the roasted chicken enchiladas ($11) also merit raves with tender chunks of chicken, corn and beans wrapped in enchiladas covered with salsa verde and garlic crema and served with cilantro rice.
Other brunch choices include shrimp and grits ($13) and migas ($8), scrambled eggs with corn tortilla strips, onions, chorizo, red peppers, Chihuahua cheese and two salsas. The regular lunch menu lists blue cheese potato chips ($7), Cheever’s chicken-fried steak with jalapeno cream gravy ($11) and a mixed seafood tamale ($16). Dinner tacks on even more meat and seafood options.
Located in a historical building that used to house a flower shop, Cheever’s feels cozy and casual with redbrick walls and white linen tablecloths. The refrigerated floral case now holds wine, beer, flowers and desserts. Near the state capitol and the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, Cheever’s is popular among local residents and visitors. Now that we’ve been, we see why. Reservations are accepted, although we were able to get seated immediately (at the bar) at noon on a busy Sunday without them.
